An Old Fart’s Ode to Social Media

An Old Fart’s Ode to Social Media

The Online Conversation
(To the tune of¬†“The Dangling Conversation” by Paul Simon)

It’s the Facebook photo albums
Of our pets, and our kids,
The flood of birthday eCards,
And funny YouTube vids,
Constantly tweeting our experience,
Like our journals read aloud,
Our pearls cast to the crowd,
In the online conversations
And the superficial memes,
Of our personal news streams.

You read your Weekly Standard,
And I my Huffington Post,
Then do battle in the comments,
To see who’s Liked the most.
Since we all answer at our leisure
Our rants and our responses
In fits and spurts will climb
In free-style Hip Hop time
Forming the online conversations
And the superficial memes,
Of our personal news streams.

Yes, we blog of things that matter
With words that must be read
“Can Instagram be worthwhile?”
“Is MySpace really dead?”
And how the chat rooms are so jaded
I can only view your profile,
I cannot feel your hand,
You’re a Facebook friend unto me,
Lost in the Online conversations,
And the superficial memes
Of our personal news streams.

—————————————

(When I finally stopped lamenting the loss of communication skills by a generation more comfortable with texting than with face-to-face conversation, I started to understand and accept. What I thought had been destroyed, I now saw to have evolved. Now I embrace the new social media, and hope to be able to ease the transition for other “seniors” with future articles.
